Musk's America PAC Drops $800K on Key Senate Races, Including Iowa

Elon Musk's political machine is officially back in the game, and Iowa is on the target list. America PAC, the billionaire's super PAC, disclosed more than $800,000 in new spending across seven Senate races and eight House contests, according to a Federal Election Commission filing released Wednesday night.

The expenditures, made between Aug. 18 and Aug. 31, show where Musk is focusing his midterm election operation as Republicans work to defend their narrow congressional majorities. Nearly 90% of the $800,475 went toward Senate races, with Iowa receiving $54,600 in what was categorized as printing expenses, typically used for mail advertising.

Where is Musk spending his money?

The largest chunk of spending, more than $247,000, went to Texas to support Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in his increasingly competitive race against Democrat James Talarico. Paxton has been badly outspent, with Talarico's campaign dropping more than $25 million on advertising since late May compared to just $119,000 from Paxton's camp, according to AdImpact data cited by the Texas Tribune.

Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins received about $170,000 in support, while Ohio Sen. Jon Husted saw nearly $106,000 in backing. The PAC also disclosed spending in New Hampshire ($91,459), Michigan ($25,605), and Alaska ($17,235).

What does this mean for Iowa?

The $54,600 earmarked for Iowa signals that Musk's operation sees the Hawkeye State as a priority in the fight for Senate control. While the exact target of the Iowa spending was not specified in the filing, the investment suggests grassroots mail outreach is underway in a state that has become a reliable Republican stronghold in recent cycles.

Musk's return to the political arena

The spending comes after Musk appeared to step back from politics following his tumultuous tenure leading the Department of Government Efficiency and a public falling out with President Donald Trump. Last year, Musk said he planned to spend a lot less on politics, remarking,

I think I've done enough.

But the relationship has since been repaired. The New York Times reported in July that Musk authorized America PAC to spend up to $120 million on a field program to elect Republicans this November. Wednesday's disclosure represents just a fraction of that potential commitment.

The spending was disclosed days after House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., reportedly met with Musk in Texas. Johnson later briefed House Republican leaders about the conversation but declined to share specifics.

What's next for America PAC?

The PAC's latest filing also listed two expenditures scheduled for Sept. 10, all categorized as printing costs. FEC data through June 30 shows America PAC had raised $50.3 million and spent $52.3 million for the 2025-26 cycle, leaving just $274,000 in cash on hand before this latest influx of funding is reported.

Musk spent more than $239 million supporting Trump and Republican candidates in 2024. His return to the political battlefield with targeted spending in key states like Iowa signals that the midterms are shaping up to be a high-stakes fight for control of Congress.
