Platner Scandals Rock Maine Race, But Dems Eye Iowa Seat
Republican Senator Susan Collins and Democrat Graham Platner are set for a fierce showdown in Maine's U.S. Senate race this November. Both candidates secured their party nominations on Tuesday, setting the stage for what could be one of the most closely watched races of the 2026 midterms. While the action is happening on the coast, the outcome could directly impact Iowa, as Democrats desperately look for a path to flip the Senate.
A Dead Heat Despite Democratic Scandals
Maine presents Democrats with a prime opportunity to flip a Senate seat in a state that backed Kamala Harris by about 7 points in 2024. However, recent scandals involving Platner have thrown the race into chaos, leaving many Democrats worried about their nominee's viability.
Collins ran unopposed for the Republican nomination. Platner secured the Democratic nod with 75 percent of the vote, defeating candidates David Costello and Governor Janet Mills, who suspended her campaign in April but remained on the ballot.
Early polling points to a tight race. A recent Tavern Research survey of 1,642 adults showed Platner up by just 2 points, 51 percent to Collins' 49 percent. A Fabrizio, Lee & Associates poll of 800 likely voters had them tied at 46 percent.
Earlier surveys gave Platner a larger lead. A University of New Hampshire poll in late May showed him up by 9 points. Collins' supporters, however, are not panicking. They point out that she trailed Sara Gideon in nearly every poll during her 2020 reelection bid but still won with just under 51 percent of the vote. Maine's independent minded electorate and ranked choice voting system make the state notoriously difficult to poll.
Platner's Baggage Piles Up
Platner's campaign has been rocked by a series of damaging revelations. The New York Times reported allegations from a former girlfriend, Lyndsey Fifield, a conservative who has worked for Republican campaigns. Fifield accused Platner of physically threatening behavior during their relationship over a decade ago, claiming he twisted her arm behind her back and shoved her into a bedroom.
Fifield acknowledged to the outlet that Platner
